The Biomedical Signal and Image Processing Laboratory is an integral part of the Department of Biotechnology and Medical Engineering at the National Institute of Technology Rourkela(NITR), is committed to developing advanced artificial intelligence (AI)-based solutions for addressing complex medical challenges. Under the leadership of Dr. Bala Chakravarthy Neelapu, the lab explores cutting-edge methodologies, including deep learning and reinforcement learning, to enhance diagnostic accuracy, disease classification, and treatment planning. With a strong focus on translational research, the lab aims to bridge computational intelligence and real-world healthcare applications.
Key areas of research include cephalometric landmark detection for orthodontic diagnosis, oral and skin cancer detection for early intervention, and acute lymphoblastic leukemia classification using deep learning algorithms. The lab also specializes in diabetic retinopathy grading, innovating robust neural networks to detect and classify disease progression, and obstructive sleep apnea detection using single-lead ECG signals for non-invasive diagnostics. Additionally, research extends to the impact of cannabis on cardiovascular health, employing advanced signal processing techniques to understand physiological effects. By integrating AI into these diverse domains, the lab aims to deliver scalable, reliable, and interpretable healthcare solutions.
